Objective To study the effect of life style changes such as low fat, high fibre vegetarian diet, moderate aerobic exercise and stress management through Rajyoga meditation on regression! progression of coronary atherosclerosis and coronary events e.g. myocardial infarction, requirement of angioplasty, bypass surgery etc.

Methodology: 518 angiographically documented CAD patients were registered for the lifestyle intervention programme. 244 patients participated in the non-randomized invitational design in Mount Abu Open Heart Trial (MAOHT) and served as their own control; whereas 274 patients were randomly divided into healthy lifestyle group (112 participated out of 140 invitations) and control group (105 participated out of 134 invitations) were invited to participate in the Abu Healthy Heart Trial (AHHT).

The healthy lifestyle intervention group received low fat high fibre vegetarian diet, moderate aerobic exercise and stress management through Rajyoga meditation and usual medical care; on the other hand the control group received low fat, high fibre vegetarian diet, moderate aerobic exercise and usual medical care.

Observation/ The results from the present investigation suggest that
Conclusion: the unique user-friendly healthy lifestyle program is feasible,

safe and compatible with other treatments in the setting of advanced coronary atherosclerosis with a high degree of compliance.

Both the trials support the hypothesis that adoption and maintenance of this unique user-friendly healthy lifestyle program which motivate patients to take up responsibility of their own health can lead to highly significant reduction in coronary atherosclerosis, reduction in hospitalization for cardiac events, requirement of anti-anginal drugs, effective control of symptoms like angina, breathlessness and better control of hypertension, diabetes and improvement in exercise tolerance, metabolic and hormonal profile and overall feeling of well-being, after one year in AHHT and two years in MAOHT.
