Role of Vipassana Meditation on attention, memory span and learning abilities among the student population

Objective : To evaluate the benefical effect of Vipasana meditation and
pranayama practice on memory, learning and attention span.

Methodology : The selected cases were subjected for Vedic / Vipasana
meditation.The entire study was divided into six major steps

1. Initial session
2. Baseline assessment session
3. Goal-setting session
4. Training session
5. Terminal session, and
6. Follow up study

Subjects both normal as well as suffering from poor memory  span were selected for Vipasana Meditation continuously for six months. The subjects were explained the significance of rationale of meditation  practice for improving psychological status especially for improving the attention and memory span. In younger children also subjects were explained to concentrate on particular point over the nasal breath. In preliminary baseline session subjects were classified from the point of view of constitutional assessment. The initial investigation like basal electrophysiological study measurement of attention and memory span was evaluated. All the electrophysiological investigation subject were carried in a calm situation. Their subjective responses like general feeling of well being, appetite, sleep, anxiety, nervousness and tremors was also noted.

After initial investigation the subjects were subjected for meditation therapy. The process of meditation was continued for 30 minutes and after that the post meditation response of the subjects was measured. On each follow-up all the neuropsychological, psychological and biochemical investigations were repeated. At the end of study the initial findings were compared with the final findings. Measurement of short-term memory, long-term memory and reflex memory, attention span and Mental fatigue were carried out in all the cases.

Conclusion : beneficial role in the improvement of mental health status. A better and improved psychomotor performance has been observed under influence of meditation practice. As the malnutrition is one of the important causes of subnormal health status thus, the meditation practice has shown better results when introduced along with additional nutrition supplement among the tribal children.
