Yoga – Rev up The Power of Body, Mind & Soul

Herbal Chikitsa

Yoga, or hatha Yoga, is an ancient form of exercise and mind/body control from which we can all greatly benefit.  It began in India circa 2000-1000 BCE as a form of meditation.  It appears in ancient holy texts such as the Upanishads and soon developed into breathing practices and body positions designed to discipline the mind and strengthen the body and soul. The word “Yoga” means “to unite” or “to join”.

When someone practices Yoga, he/she is developing stronger muscles and greater flexibility. It is best not to push into poses but ease into them, allowing for the muscles to naturally develop over time. Yoga is not a race or competition, and should be very comforting and relaxing, not painful. When practiced correctly, Yoga should release long- held tension in the back, neck and shoulder areas. It should also produce a sense of awareness of your body and space.

Over time, one’s breath becomes slower and deeper throughout the poses, and the heart rate actually slows. Contrary to cardiovascular routines, Yoga will lower blood pressure and improve blood circulation to the extremities. In this regard, Yoga is considered ideal for diabetes patients and those with circulatory problems.   It is also ideal for those with hypertension and stress (all of us in the metropolitan region?).

Yoga is also great for children. It helps children build confidence in themselves and trust in others.   It helps to develop themes of discipline, focus and balance. It also helps them to learn to love and respect their bodies at a young age, which is so rare in today’s busy times. You are sure to catch a smiling face on a child as they stop squirming and suddenly morph into a “cat”, “dog” or “tree”.

Award winning Yoga studios in Baltimore include Beyond Postures, Charm City Yoga, and Evolve Well Healing Arts Studio.  Evolve Well Healing Arts Studio has classes especially designed for children and families.  Established studios in greater Maryland include Golden Heart Yoga in Annapolis, Balance Pilates and Yoga Studio in Bethesda, and Willow Street Yoga in Takoma Park.

Those who practice Yoga consistently will start to develop muscles in the torso, arms, legs and back.  Overall posture and one’s confidence in their body also improve. Those who consistently practice Yoga for years will begin to develop a mindset of a “Yogi” – one of inward peace and outward compassion.
